Booking a Vacation Home Near Portland, Maine

On average, Portland hotels have a higher cost than anywhere else in the country. Maybe it’s because Portland is such a great destination to visit. Or maybe it’s because each hotel really gives it their all, creating vibey atmospheres and comfortable accommodations. 

Either way, some people prefer opting for a vacation rental at an Airbnb or VRBO instead. If that’s you, I feel you. I did the same thing on my first trip to Portland.

We had a delightful stay at a cozy BnB, a charming white house set against a green lawn in Scarborough. Hosted by Steven, the Airbnb, named “Rustic Suite near downtown Portland and Beaches,” lived up to its listing and exceeded our expectations. The space is incredibly cozy, impeccably clean, and exceptionally comfortable.

The atmosphere of the place is truly special. It features a unique layout, functioning as a studio apartment with the master bed at the front and an additional room at the back, creating a family room/TV space. A futon by the TV provides a second bed, and a delightful loft area with two twin beds overlooks the family room.

Conveniently, it’s just a 10-minute drive from downtown Portland, making it a practical choice. What’s more, the accommodation is pet-friendly.

How to Get to Portland, Maine

Whether you’re visiting the city as part of a New England Road Trip or flying straight into this coastal town, there are several ways to get to Portland, Maine.

Driving to Portland, Maine:

For those journeying from Boston, Massachusetts, the drive to Portland is a quick two hours. Covering a scenic route of 107 miles along the coastline, the drive from Boston to Portland offers captivating views of the ocean and rugged cliffs.

Visitors to Boston also find it an appealing excursion to explore another enchanting New England city. Portland is also accessible for a weekend getaway from other Northeastern areas, such as Manhattan, where a five-hour drive makes it a perfect short escape.

Train to Portland, Maine:

Opting for the Amtrak Downeaster provides another excellent option for travelers seeking a relaxing journey with picturesque landscapes. The approximately 2.5-hour train ride from Boston offers ticket prices ranging from $3 to $30. 

The train meanders through changing scenery, from sandy beaches to expansive green fields, creating a delightful experience, especially during the fall foliage season. The ride is comfortable and hassle-free, allowing passengers to unwind and appreciate the journey.

Flying to Portland, Maine:

If driving or taking the train is not feasible, flying into Portland is a convenient option. Major airlines offer flights to Portland International Jetport (PWM), located just a few miles from the city center. 

Once at the airport, various transportation options, including taxis, ride-sharing services, rental cars, and the METRO bus system, are readily available. 

The Greater Portland Transit District METRO operates Route #5, providing bus service from the airport to downtown Portland. For international travelers, Boston Logan International (BOS) might offer better flight options, with subsequent options to drive or take a train from Boston to Portland.

How To Get Around Portland, Maine

Downtown Portland is highly pedestrian-friendly, making it unnecessary to use your car once parked until you’re ready to leave the Old Port area. However, if you plan to explore attractions outside the city center, such as lighthouses, you’ll need some form of wheeled transportation, which could be a car or public transit.

Transportation Options in Portland, Maine:

Walking

While downtown Portland is very walkable, I don’t advise using this as your only mode of transportation during your visit. 

Walking in Old Port is charming and highly recommended, but if you want to visit any of the attractions outside of the downtown area, you’ll likely want to use a quicker mode of transportation. 

For instance, it’s nearly five miles from downtown Portland to the Portland Head Light on Cape Elizabeth. If you were walking there, it could take nearly two hours.

To get the full Portland experience, you’re better off renting a bike or car or using public transportation.

Biking

Portland offers well-marked bike lanes, and many hotels provide bike rentals for day use. Public bikes are also available, allowing you to pedal around and explore. 

This is a fantastic way to see the greater Portland area for those not wishing to hop on the bus or rent a car. It’s also a terrific way of seeing Portland from another perspective. Keep in mind, however, that biking is a slower mode of transportation, so adjust your itinerary accordingly.

Public Transportation

Portland features a convenient bus service (known as METRO) that covers the entire city. Using cash for bus rides is the most straightforward payment method. Fares typically range from $1 to $4, and exact change is required. 

Getting around on the bus is easy, and some locals opt for this mode exclusively. In fact, one of my tour guides mentioned that he’d been car-free for years since public transportation is so much easier and less expensive than owning a car.

Ride-Share

Uber or Lyft are readily available options in Portland. While ride-share services may be pricier than the bus, they offer speed and convenience. Ridesharing is a responsible choice, especially if you plan to spend a few evenings out at one of Portland’s many pubs. 

Car

Driving is the easiest way to navigate Portland. Parking is generally painless, though it can be a bit costly depending on the location. Options include paid lots, on-street parking, and garages.

Metered parking is a more affordable choice, typically at $2.50 per hour. Keep in mind that on-street parking in Portland is complimentary from 6 p.m. until 9 a.m., Monday through Saturday, as well as all day on Sundays and major holidays. If Old Port exploration is a priority without a car, opt for a hotel in that area, but consider avoiding Monjoy Hill due to its elevation. You might not want to make the climb up that big hill after a day of exploring.
