May in Arizona offers pleasant weather without the scorching heat of summer. It’s the last month before autumn when you can enjoy the outdoors without worrying too much about sunstroke.

I’m the type of person who likes to look at something from all angles before making a decision. So, while May in Arizona is one of the best times of the year to visit, let’s look at why not to visit during this month.

For instance, the weather, though generally pleasant, can be warmer than some might prefer, especially as it marks the beginning of the hotter summer season. High temperatures may not be ideal if you’re sensitive to heat. 

Additionally, some outdoor activities, particularly in the desert, can become challenging due to the increasing temperatures. 

It’s also worth noting that May is a transition period, and while the tourist crowds are not at their peak, popular attractions may still see an uptick in visitors. 

If you’re looking to avoid crowds and milder temperatures are priorities, other times of the year might be more suitable for a visit to Arizona. I’d recommend visiting in February which marks the start of a beautiful spring season.

The red rock landscape of Sedona is where I first developed my love for hiking. 

May provides an optimal climate for hiking amidst this ethereal wilderness. 

With temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-29°C), the weather is comfortably warm, making it an ideal time to explore the diverse trails that offer breathtaking views and unique rock formations. 

The mild temperatures enhance the overall hiking experience, attracting outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventure without the intensity of summer heat.

But beware! The last time I went, when we were exploring the old cemetery, I swear something grabbed my sweater!

7. Kayaking or Tube on the Salt River

Some of my favorite memories growing up are spinning down the Salt River in a tube with my dad. Since I grew up in Utah and my dad lived in Arizona, this meant I spent every summer in the sweltering AZ heat, so you know we had to find ways to stay cool. 

Luckily, the Salt River runs through the eastern part of the Phoenix Metropolitan, so it’s easy to access. 

Enjoy water activities in May by kayaking on the Salt River. The weather is warm, and the river’s gentle currents make it an ideal setting for a relaxing paddle. 

The river is surrounded by scenic desert landscapes and there’s potential that you’ll spot some wildlife. I’ve seen herds of wild horses pass through the river and I’ve also seen rattlesnakes curled up on river rocks. Just be careful and respect the wildlife from afar and it’s a super fun experience.

The Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Festival is Arizona’s oldest birding festival. Active since 1991, the Spring Fling 2024, will offer small group, car-caravan-style guided field trips and a limited number of Covid-safe Group Van Field Trips to remote locations for bird sightings.

Annual Route 66 Fun Run

The annual Fun Run gathers around eight to nine hundred show cars, cruising down the longest remaining stretch of Route 66. 

The festival culminates in a massive car show and festival in Historic Downtown Kingman, creating an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators alike.

Cinco De Mayo Celebration At Tlaquepaque

Experience a vibrant Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on Saturday, May 4th, 2024, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm at Tlaquepaque in Sedona.

Cherry Creek Utv Fest

The three-day spectacle includes food, craft, and exhibition vendors along Route 66, burnouts, photo opportunities with Street Drags Trophy Girls, and general admission priced at $20 with free entry for children 6 and under accompanied by a paying adult. 

Convenient spectator parking and shuttle service are available at the Mohave County Fairgrounds, ensuring an exciting experience for gearheads and racing enthusiasts alike.

Getting Around Arizona By Car

Contrary to places like New York City, where public transportation is highly convenient, navigating Arizona is significantly easier with a car. 

Despite the presence of the Valley Metro Rail in Phoenix, its limited scope doesn’t extend beyond the Phoenix Metropolitan area. 

To reach destinations such as Sedona, Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, Tucson, or anywhere outside of Phoenix, renting a car or utilizing a shuttle service is essential.
