Each tour may vary when it comes to which historic landmarks you’ll stop by. For instance, instead of just passing by the Henry Wadsworth-Longfellow House, our tour got a special VIP tour inside the Customs House.
This stop wasn’t advertised before our tour. So it was an excellent surprise to find out we’d get to peak through this 156-year-old building on a special invitation.
I imagine that other tour stops are also adjusted on occasion in order to provide the best experience to attendees depending on what is available each day.

My Experience on the Tour
My first-hand experience with A Walk Through Time Tour in Portland, Maine, was fantastic. I’d booked the tour for myself, my mom, and my sis as our first excursion for our day trip to Portland.
Our guide, James, a friendly “from away” native, had been guiding tours in Portland for many years. Although James had been living in Portland for half his life, he joked that he would never be considered a Mainer because he was from Boston originally. Apparently, to not be considered a transplant, you have to have family in Maine dating back three or four generations.
Despite not being a native Mainer, James’ passion for the city’s history and culture was obvious. He had a deep knowledge of the town as only someone who had been living there for decades could know. And it was clear that he had a genuine love for the place he now calls home.
Our tour started in the morning, and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick off our day of exploration. This tour served as the perfect introduction to the city. It provided a lay of the land and a glimpse into Portland’s fascinating history.
James was not just a knowledgeable guide; he was a masterful storyteller. He effortlessly wove together the threads of Portland’s history, from the devastating fires to the city’s role in the Revolutionary War, and even threw in the town’s surprising connection to bubble gum.
By the end of the tour, I had not only a newfound appreciation for Portland’s rich history but also a mental map of the city’s most significant landmarks. It provided an excellent foundation for the rest of our day’s explorations.

- Personal Touch: The intimate group size, capped at 20 participants (our group had nine), allows for a more personalized and interactive experience with the guide.
- Convenient Start Time: The 10 a.m. start time isn’t too early and is ideal for getting a lay of the land and familiarizing yourself with the city and its history. It’s an excellent way to start your day.
- Diverse Landmarks: The tour covers a wide range of landmarks, from historic buildings and statues to fish markets and lobstermen, offering a comprehensive look at Portland’s culture and history.
- Year-Round Availability: Whether you’re visiting in the peak of summer or during the cooler months, the tour offers a year-round opportunity to explore the city’s history and culture.
- Local Treat at the End: This was my favorite pro of the tour. Although the tour advertises that everyone gets a local treat at the end of the experience, I must have missed that fine print. So, it was a wonderful surprise when James busted out cookies from a local bakery. And, goodness, they were tasty.
Overall, the walking tour is a delightful experience to add your visit to this charming coastal town.
Tour Cons
Even though I thoroughly enjoyed the tour, I want to make sure you have all the details when planning your Portland itinerary.
While none of these are really cons per se, they are things to keep in mind to make sure that this walking tour is right for you:
- Physical Demand: Walking for an extended period may be physically challenging for some, so be prepared with comfortable footwear.
- Weather Dependency: The tour is conducted outdoors, and the experience could be less enjoyable in adverse weather conditions, such as rain or extreme heat.
- Group Size: The tour takes groups of up to 20 people, which could become a con if you’re looking for a more private experience.
- Not Ideal for Young Children: While the history of Portland was fascinating to all the adults in our group, it may not be ideal for young children who may get bored during what is essentially a two-hour history lesson.
- No Restroom Stops: The tour does not include restroom breaks, so participants should plan accordingly and use facilities beforehand.
- Extended Duration: The biggest con for me was that the tour was advertised for 2 hours, and our tour lasted closer to 3 hours. While this isn’t really a bad thing — after all, we got almost a whole extra hour of guided tour fun — it did mean I had to leave the group to put more money in the meter. And I was getting pretty hungry toward the end (another reason I was so excited for the cookies!)
Despite these cons, this Portland walking tour remains an enjoyable experience for those seeking to explore the city’s history.
Although, I’d recommend not parking at a meter like I did (there are lots and garages around town). Also, be flexible in case the tour runs a little long.

Is This Tour Handicap Accessible?
Portland has a strong commitment to preserving its historic sites. Because of that, this tour may not be fully accessible for individuals with mobility challenges. Many of the roads are made of cobblestone, which might be difficult for those using walkers or wheelchairs.
Also, while most of the tour takes place outside, you might be invited in to tour a building like we did at the Custom House. And these historic buildings may not be equipped with accessible structures like ramps.
Unfortunately, it is not very handicap accessible.
Where Should We Park Our Vehicle?
Please, learn from my mistakes. Don’t park at a parking meter for this tour. While the closest parking lot to the tour starting place (at least the one I pulled into) was particularly expensive — hence why I chose street parking instead — there are other lots about 10-15 minutes away from the starting point that have reasonable all-day parking.
Since I parked at a meter and the tour went longer than the 2 hours described, I had to leave the tour and go back to the meter to put more time in. The meters cap out at 2 hours. So if you have any intention of exploring the town afterward, then a lot is your better bet anyway.
Among the more budget-friendly parking lot choices are the Holiday Inn by the Bay and Spring Street Parking Garage. Both are located approximately a 10-15 minute walk from the tour’s meeting point. You can find them at 320 Fore Street, in front of the Portland Beer Hub.
An alternative option is the Ocean Gateway lot at the East end of Commercial Street. This lot charges $15 for the entire day.
The closest garage is the Custom House Square parking garage at 25 Pearl Street. Parking here is $5.00 per hour.
Is the Tour Dog Friendly?
I was surprised to find out how much of a dog-friendly town Portland is. When I was shopping on Exchange Street, I noticed that most shops not only allow any dog to come inside, but they encourage it!
So, I asked Pamela, the owner of the tour company, if dogs were allowed on the walking tour. She said yes!
Just keep in mind that some historic buildings won’t allow dogs in. So, if the tour goes somewhere like the Customs House like ours did, someone might have to wait outside with your furry friend.
It’s also probably wise to notify the tour company if you plan to bring your dog so that they’re prepared for an extra four-legged guest.

Can You Walk Everywhere in Portland, Maine?
The walking tour will take you through most of Portland’s downtown area. Portland is a very walkable city. And you’re able to walk to just about any major attraction, especially in the downtown area.
